For the past seven years the city has hosted the annual UNSPOKEN event, focusing on human rights violations and persecutions around the world. It happens again Thursday and Friday with the 8th annual UNSPOKEN Human Rights Festival, being produced by the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees.
• Thursday: Will feature a provider training – “Resiliency: Treating Trauma in Youth and Veterans” – at Delta Hotels by Marriott Utica, 8 a.m. to noon. Tickets are $20 per participant. Presenters include Dr. Joanne Joseph from SUNY Polytechnic Institute and Jacqueline Warmuth, vice president of clinical development at Sitrin Health Care Center. • Friday: A festival reception will be held at Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute- Sculpture Court beginning at 4:30 p.m. At 6 p.m., Kristin Beck, a retired United States Navy SEAL, will talk in the MWPAI Auditorium. Beck gained public attention in 2013 when she came out as a trans woman, the first openly transgender former U.S. Navy SEAL. Beck served for 20 years in the U.S. Navy SEALs before the transition and took part in 13 total deployments, including seven combat missions.Read More
