Press Release: 2016 Unspoken Humans Rights Film Festival October 27-28

The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees invites the public to the sixth annual UNSPOKEN Human Rights Film Festival from Thursday, October 27th to Saturday, October 29th, 2016. This year, fifteen films submitted from around the world have been selected to be shown at the festival. UNSPOKEN is more than films and will also include a Provider Training - Refugee Trauma: Culture & Care at the Radisson Hotel -Utica Centre on Thursday, October 27th from 8:00am- 12:00pm, a Firefly Storytelling Session at the Tramontane Cafe from 7:30-9:30pm on Thursday, October 27th that provides the opportunity for community members and guest speakers to share their stories and experiences and on Friday 28th, there will be a Festival Reception and Silent Auction that will be held at Munson-Williams- Proctor Arts Institute- Fountain Elms.

MVRCR Participates in 2016 Welcome Week September 16th-25th

Starting September 16th, the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees (MVRCR) will celebrate Welcoming Week. Welcoming Week is an annual celebration bringing together thousands of people and hundreds of local events across the nation to celebrate the contributions of immigrants and refugees and acknowledge the role that communities play in fostering greater welcome. Welcoming Week is Sept. 16-25 across the country and now expanding to other parts of the world.

Traffic Safety Participates in Build a Bike 2016

On Saturday June 20, 2016 the MVRCR Traffic Safety Program Participated in the 11th Annual Build-a-Bike Event, organized by Utica Safe Schools.The Build a Bike event is a great community building partnership event providing nearly 1000 bikes to our diverse community.  MVRCR's Multi-Cultural Traffic Safety program is happy to have participated by providing translated traffic safety education, helmet education and a portion of the helmets.

MVRCR at 2016 Boilermaker

On Sunday July 10, 2016 Utica will be host to the Boilermaker Road Race and the Refugee Center will be showing our support and participating in two major ways. The Refugee Center will be represented along the International Mile with volunteers and international performers through the first mile of the course. During the 5K road race look for members of the Refugee Running Team who will be wearing shirts with the MVRCR logo and the One World Running Team blue man logo.

The 6th annual Redeemer Cup, Utica’s own International Soccer Tournament, was held June 4th and 5th in Proctor Park. Begun in 2010 by the Redeemer Church, the Redeemer Cup builds bridges between people and celebrates Utica’s extraordinary diversity.

The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees and Fidelis Care invite the public to join them in celebrating World Refugee Day on Saturday, June 18th in Hanna Park at Utica City Hall from 12 pm until 4 pm. Utica, a city known as “The Town that Loves Refugees,” is an especially appropriate place to commemorate refugees’ endurance and reflect on their contributions to the local community.

The Office for New Americans (ONA) at the Refugee Center is partnering with Mohawk Valley Community College to offer Adult English Classes. The program is free and available for those 18 and over. University of Michigan Students Enjoy Spring Break in Utica for the 2nd Year

The opportunity to enjoy a small break from the stresses and burdens of higher education is relished by many students during spring break. Popular spring break locations like Florida beaches and Mexican resorts allow students to forget about their anxieties and relax for a few days.  In order to fairly represent the less sunny locales, MVRCR has a partnership with the University of Michigan to provide an Alternative Spring Break, with equally as much fun but with a socially conscious motivation.
