Svetlana is currently the Manager of Compass Interpreters, the interpretation and translation division of the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees. Svetlana is a former immigrant from Belarus who came to the U.S. with her family in August 2005 through the lottery on a Diversity Visa. In early 2006 she was given the opportunity to work at the Refugee Center as a volunteer and was later asked to work as an on-call interpreter. In July, 2007 she became a full-time case worker in the Resettlement Department, where she worked until 2010 when she became Volunteer Coordinator. Svetlana is fluent in Russian, Belorussian, and English, and communicates easily in Ukrainian. She holds a B.S. and M.S. in Teaching, specializing in Biology and Chemistry. Prior to coming to the U.S. she worked for 13 years as a Teacher and Administrator at the Department of Education in Belarus. Svetlana enjoys working at the Center and always does her best on behalf of Utica's refugee and immigrant community.
